Ambien vs. Restoril: How Are These Sleep Medicines Different?

Ambien is the brand name for zolpidem; Restoril is the brand name for temazepam. Both are prescribed for insomnia, but zolpidem is a nonbenzodiazepine sedative-hypnotic, while temazepam is a benzodiazepine. A prescriber chooses treatment based on the type of sleep problem and a person’s risks.

Uses and differences

The Ambien label describes short-term treatment for insomnia characterized by difficulty starting sleep. Temazepam is labeled for short-term treatment of insomnia, generally 7 to 10 days. These label descriptions are not a personal treatment plan; follow the instructions given by your prescriber.

Neither medicine should be shared or combined with another sleep medicine unless a clinician specifically directs it. Alcohol and other medicines that cause sleepiness can increase impairment and other risks.

Side effects and warnings

Zolpidem carries a boxed warning for complex sleep behaviors, including sleep-walking or sleep-driving while not fully awake. Serious injuries and deaths have been reported. Contact the prescriber promptly if such behavior occurs.

Temazepam’s label warns about misuse, addiction, physical dependence, and withdrawal. Combining benzodiazepines such as temazepam with opioids can cause profound sedation and breathing problems. Do not abruptly stop ongoing temazepam treatment without medical guidance.

Discuss your options with a clinician

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about other medicines, alcohol or substance use, breathing problems, pregnancy, and any history of dependence. If insomnia persists or worsens, ask about possible causes and non-medicine treatments rather than increasing a dose yourself.
